Chief Diversity Officer & Senior International Officer Strategic Leadership Forum

Diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) as well as comprehensive campus internationalization are key components of strategic planning in higher education. Whereas diversity and inclusion initiatives have been rooted in the civil rights era, campus internationalization efforts are a more recent phenomena. Regardless of their origins, the evolving impact both DEI and comprehensive internationalization will play in higher education is undeniable. The CDO/SIO Strategic Leadership Forum will explore campus internationalization and the necessity of diversity, equity and inclusion in its success. Questions addressed during the Strategic Leadership Forum will include:

  • What is the scope of a Chief Diversity Officer and Senior International Officer?

  • What are historical barriers to leaders in these roles working together?

  • What opportunities exist for CDO’s & SIO’s to strategically align their units toward advancing campus internationalization as well as diversity, equity and inclusion?

The Strategic Leadership Forum will examine best practices for collaboration between Chief Diversity Officers and Senior International Officers that promotes equitable access to the benefits afforded through campus internationalization. The event will conclude with attendees participating in an interactive Think Tank session which will lead to the development of a series of guidelines for embedding diversity, equity, and inclusive good practices and policies into campus internationalization.

  • 8:45-9:45am Diversity, Inclusion, and Comprehensive Campus Internationalization: Exploring the Potential Impact

As the world becomes ever more interconnected and the demographics of students change to reflect new flows of global migration, campus leaders are faced with the task of increasing access, fostering inclusion, and advancing internationalization. In this work, the two spheres of Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) and Comprehensive Internationalization (CI) have an opportunity to find common ground to create dynamic campuses that meet the needs of the changing world. Although these efforts have historically emerged along separate paths, there are now many overlapping objectives. This session considers how individuals can lead their institutions to think strategically about where D&I and CI can overlap for the greatest impact.
