2021 Community College Global Education Forum

Overview

Community colleges play an integral role in educating post-secondary students and preparing them to thrive in our global and interconnected society. Approximately 41 percent of undergraduates in the United States attend community colleges, and enrolled students increasingly identify as students of color, students who are first in their families to attend college, and students with high financial need. Given the increased understanding of the academic, interpersonal and career benefits gained by participating in global educational programs, it’s essential that students who attend a community college have equitable access to the same benefits their peers attending 4-year colleges and universities do. 

Diversity Abroad is proud to launch the inaugural Community College Global Education Forum, being held virtually October 6-7, 2020. The Community College Global Education Forum will bring together faculty, administrators and practitioners from community colleges and their stakeholders to explore how  global programs — such as education abroad and other types of international engagement — can be leveraged to support the academic success, interpersonal growth and career readiness of students at community colleges.

The Community College Global Education Forum is a unique space to network, share good practices and chart a path to increase capacity for internationalization and to create equitable access to the benefits of international education at community colleges.

Intended Audience

The target audience for the Community College Forum will be community college professionals who primarily work in the following roles/units:

  • Education Abroad Professionals/Program Leaders
  • International Student and Scholar Services
  • Diversity, Inclusion and Multicultural Affairs 
  • Student Success
  • Academic & Workforce Faculty
  • Transfer Students 

Additionally professionals from government agencies and other organizations who have a commitment to supporting the success of community college students.

11:00 – 11:10 am EST – Welcoming Remarks

11:10 am – 12:00 pm EST – Fireside Chat with Chancellor Lee D. Lambert, J.D. from Pima Community College

12:15 – 1:00 pm EST – What Does Diversity & Inclusion within Global Education Mean for Community Colleges

This session will provide information and discuss notable trends/data points that will bring insight to the importance of diversity and inclusion within global education at Community Colleges.

  • Dr. Armenta Hinton, Vice President for Equity and Inclusion at Harrisburg Area Community College

1:00 – 1:30 pm EST – Lightning Round of Promising Practices

Leaders at various community colleges will share promising practices from their respective institutions that have helped them to diversify education abroad. Topics they will be speaking on will include: Understanding and engaging your diverse student population, working with faculty and partnerships off campus, and funding opportunities.

  • Dr. Fabiola Riobe – Associate Provost Academic Innovation, Online Education & Global Opportunities State University of New York at Rockland Community College
  • Geoffrey Bradshaw, Ph.D. – Dean of International Education & Interim Academic Diversity Officer. Madison Area Technical College

1:45 – 2:25 pm EST – Breakout Discussions & Think Tank Session

This session will allow participants to take a deep dive into exploring meaningful engagement and best practices at community colleges around the following topics: Faculty Engagement, Engaging Diverse Student Populations, Buy-in from External Stakeholders, Innovative Global Education Programming and Professional Development & Training.

Wednesday, October 7, 2020

11:00 am – 12:00 pm EST – Collaboration to Advance Diversity, Equity & Inclusion within Global Education at Community Colleges

The theme for day two is taking a deeper look into what collaboration looks like within the community college space. This session will provide information and discuss notable trends/data points that will bring insight to the value of collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to further global programming at community colleges

  • S. Tamer Cavusgil, Ph.D. – Executive Director, Center for International Business, Education & Research, Georgia State University
  • Kelly Poppen – Director, International Student Services, Miami Dade College
  • Jen Worth – Senior Vice President for Workforce and Economic Development, American Association of Community Colleges

12:00 – 12:30 pm EST – Lightning Round of Promising Practices

12:45 – 1:45 pm EST – Breakout Discussions & Think Tank Session Pt. 2

Inspired by the promising practices shared during the Lightning Round, the second Think-Tank session will continue building upon the concepts developed within the first session with the hopes of finalizing the 3-5 recommendations to share at the end of the seminar.

1:45 – 2:00 pm EST – Final Reflections & Goal Setting
